Shopping for a Shop?

Identifying trustworthy auto repair facilities is as easy as 1-2-3
(and 4-5 for good measure)

By Joanna Newton

For motorists who don't have a "go-to" auto repair facility that they trust with their vehicle for repairs and routine maintenance, a simple oil change can become a roll of the dice—a potentially expensive gamble with one of their most valuable possessions.

If you feel uncomfortable with a recommended repair or are unsure about how much you're quoted for a service, AAA recommends that you seek a second opinion.

Identifying an auto repair facility you can trust doesn't have to be a guessing game. To help you identify a trustworthy shop, here are five things to look for.

  • Appearance: A well-organized repair facility reflects attention to detail and an effort to maintain a professional image.
  • Technicians: The facility should employ qualified technicians who receive ongoing training in the latest technology.
  • Equipment: A good shop will have up-to-date equipment and access to repair data for all of the makes and models it services. Make sure that it services yours.
  • Warranty: Quality shops offer at least a 12-month/12,000-mile parts and labor warranty on their work.
  • Amenities: The facility should have a comfortable waiting area and clean restrooms. Many shops also have pick-up and drop-off service for their customers' convenience.

Still unsure about where to take your vehicle? Then check out two "sure bets"—AAA's trustworthy network of Approved Auto Repair and Car Care Plus facilities.

Approved Auto Repair shops are inspected by AAA specialists and must maintain rigorous performance standards for technical training, equipment, quality, cleanliness and customer service. Their customers are continually surveyed, and every facility must maintain a 90 percent or higher customer satisfaction score in all areas.

Car Care Plus shops are actual AAA facilities—owned and operated by the same AAA that members have trusted for over 100 years.

Now that you can identify quality shops and know that you can place your trust in AAA Approved Auto Repair and Car Care Plus facilities, you'll never have to worry about gambling on car repairs again.
