The Winter Driving Quiz

Winter driving can present tough challenges to even the most experienced drivers. Do you know how to prepare for extreme conditions? This quiz will help you prepare for the winter wonderland.

1. What should you do if you begin to lose control of your vehicle when driving on ice?

a. Blink your headlights and hope for the best.
b. Shift into reverse.
c. Take off your glasses in case the airbag deploys.
d. Steer into the skid and keep steady, firm pressure on the brake. (Pump the brake if you don't have ABS.)

2. You find that your car is covered with snow. What should you do before getting on the road?

a. Clear the windshield enough to see out, and let the wind blow the rest of the snow off.
b. Pour boiling water or very hot coffee on the windows and doors to melt the snow.
c. Turn on the windshield wipers and clear the rest when you get home.
d. Clear all windows. Remove snow from the hood and roof so it doesn't fly off and blind other drivers.

3. The weatherman is calling for a major storm near an area where you plan to travel. You should:

a. Ignore it. Those guys never get things right.
b. Don't worry about it. You'll be traveling on main roads.
c. Travel at the height of the storm and try to get behind a snowplow.
d. Watch the weather reports closely. Leave early or delay your trip, if possible.

4. Every car should have a winter weather emergency kit that includes:

a. Packs of gum, the complete works of Shakespeare, and a flashlight with dead batteries.
b. An iPad, an inflatable raft and $10,000 in cash.
c. A St. Bernard carrying a barrel of brandy.
d. Flares, a shovel, sand or cat litter, a blanket, drinking water, flashlight, high-energy food and a charged cell phone.

5. Which of the following is not a winter driving hazard?

a. Icy, snowy roads.
b. Poor visibility and low light conditions.
c. Impatient drivers who don't leave enough stopping distance.
d. Santa's sleigh parked on the roof.

If you answered anything but "D" to the questions above, you may need to refresh your winter driving techniques. (Note: We will NOT accept "all of the above" for Question 5. Santa knows what he's doing, and you shouldn't be driving anywhere near the roof.)
